I'm very proud of my students that push to achieve goals. These students above (Catherine Hickey, Kaitlyn Bolin, and Mackenzie Woods, 2019) are a few that are invited to the annual Major Donor Dinner. For the past two years, I have provided the artwork for or created the gifts for this event to bring attention to the studio art program. After this year's event, my students said they'd take the baton and continue my efforts in promoting the fine arts. Two of the students pictured below are also going to attend NCECA, the National Council on the Education of Ceramic Arts, a conference I attempt to attend with students each year. Although our studio program is small offering a BA and ceramics has only two official classes, I encourage students to take directed studies to continue their practice. During these classes, I work alongside them at nights so I can mentor the work ethics that go along with production work. I encourage students to participate in the art club The Haus of Art in order to create student-led events, delegate information, foster a sense of community, and facilitate community service projects. We are asked twice a year during finals week to do sidewalk art for encouragement of the campus to stay positive. Students are encouraged to do fundraising events to earn supply money, conference fees, and practice professionalism in marketing and selling as a professional. Often we donate money back to the community to pay it forward. When attending the Major Donor dinner, we want the students to realize that philanthropy builds stronger communities. As donors give to the art department, we pay it forward. Students holding scholarships are evaluated annually to see if they have maintained standards and grown including applying for juried exhibits and publications such as the Candelabra.
